  15. BBSE3005 Inter-disciplinary Building Services Design Reports prepared by BSE/ME students Design folder Stage 1 design report Stage 2 design report

  16. Integration of Knowledge BBSE3005 Inter-disciplinary Building Services Design • The design project is related to other BSE courses • BBSE2001 Utility Services • BBSE2002 Electrical Power Supply and Lighting Engineering • BBSE2003 Project and Contract Management • BBSE3003 Fire Protection Engineering • BBSE3004 Air Conditioning and Refrigeration • MECH3005 Building Services • MECH3023 Building Energy Management and Control Systems • Students can integrate the learning effectively

  17. Programme 2006-2007 BBSE3005 Inter-disciplinary Building Services Design • First semester:- • Sep 2006: Background Research • Oct 2006: Design Concepts • 31-Oct-06: Interim Crit Presentation • Nov/Dec 2006: Design Development • 05-Dec-06: Final Crit Presentation • Second semester: • Jan-Mar/Apr 2007: Detailed Design • 28-Mar-2007: Stage 2 Oral Presentation

  18. Background Research BBSE3005 Inter-disciplinary Building Services Design • Objective: To develop and evaluate the basic information about the site conditions, client’s requirements and design strategy. • Research Method: Students will be divided into study groups with 4 to 5 persons in each group and will carry out the investigations to develop the key information of the project in 2 weeks time. They shall discuss with the design tutors to seek for advice and guidance.

  19. Background Research BBSE3005 Inter-disciplinary Building Services Design • Scope of Work: The research study shall focus on three principal areas. The aim is to search, collect and assess the essential information and data that are critical for planning, designing and operating the facilities in this project. • (a) Site Conditions and Environment • Site access, transportation and circulation • Surrounding buildings and neighbourhood settings • Climatic conditions, ventilation, air quality and noise • Soil conditions (geotechnical) • History and social culture

  20. Background Research BBSE3005 Inter-disciplinary Building Services Design • Scope of Work: (cont’d) • (b) Client’s Requirements and Goals • Overall theme and quality of the project development • General requirements and targets (functional and technical) • Specific requirements and preference (technical and contractual) • Project duration and time phasing

  21. Imagine you are the Client. What do you want/need?

  22. Background Research BBSE3005 Inter-disciplinary Building Services Design • Scope of Work: (cont’d) • (c) (Building Services) Design Strategy and Constraints • Design objectives and design criteria • Local regulations, authority approval and design practices • Cost estimate and budget (preliminary) • Coordination with building structure, architectural finishes and other services • Utility connections and plant rooms (space requirements) • Energy efficiency, sustainability and maintainability • Design flexibility and reliability

  23. Background Research BBSE3005 Inter-disciplinary Building Services Design • Expected Outcome: Students shall analyse and organise their research findings in a systematic way so that the key information can be identified and used in the later design stages. • The information shall be documented clearly in the design folder and proper citations shall be provided to the references and information sources. • Each student group will make an oral presentation (15 minutes each) to explain the major findings.
