  2. Prayer is an awareness of God and response to the presence of the sacred in all our life. What is Prayer?

In ourselves We are at the heart of all that we encounter, so when we try to answer the question, “Where do we meet God?”, we must begin with ourselves. • In others We live in communities so we must turn to others to more fully discover God. The bible tells us that our relationship with others is the true indicator of our relationship with God • In creation God is the source of all creation, and therefore we must continue to seek God through all parts of creation. Where and How do we meet God?

  4. Find a prayer online or from a book. • In groups of three, complete the following: • Share your prayers. • Choose one to analyze for the class. • Write the prayer on chart paper. • Analyze the prayer using the questions on the next slide. • Present your prayer and questions to the class.   5. How does your prayer show an awareness of God? How is your prayer a response to God or the sacred? How does your prayer show the presence of God in ourselves? How does your prayer show the presence of God in others? How does your prayer show the presence of God in creation? Analyze your prayer

  6. 1. Blessing and Adoration • Prayers that illustrate God’s gifts and our acceptance of those gifts. Example: Loving God, your spiritual blessing unites us in love and peace. Together we show the love of Christ to our brothers and sisters. Five Types of PRayer

  7. 2. Thanksgiving • A prayer of appreciation of the gifts God has give us. Example: Thank-you, O Lord, for your guidance and strength as I enter into a new school year.

  8. 3. Petition • Prayers in which we ask God for things we need. Example: Pray for me, O God in Heaven, that I may have the abilities to succeed and the courage to persevere when times are difficult.

  9. 4. Intercession • Prayers in which we ask God to help others. Example: Dear Lord, please pray for all those in our world who are hungry and alone. Help them to find strength and love.

  10. 5. Praise • Prayers that recognize the glory and power of God. Example: O wondrous, God! You are glorious in your works and through your power, have created the world. We praise you and worship you for all our days.

  11. Create a prayer of your own that includes at least TWO forms of prayer. Your prayer must: • Be 6-10 sentences. • Include at least 2 references to God in various forms. • Clearly illustrate at least two forms of prayer. Your task:

  12. Dear Father in Heaven, You have shown me the power of love through your son, Jesus. The love that He brought to this world unites us as a community. Thank-you for giving us the gift of family and friends. It is through them that we become whole. Pray for me that I may continue to love as You have loved us. Help me to be compassionate and forgiving to everyone I meet. For this I pray, Amen. Prayer Example:
