THE NOBILITY • Had been responsible for the Aristocratic revolt and the challenge of ‘absolutism’ • Popular with 3rd Estate UNTIL… • 25 September 1788 – Parlement declares Estates-General should be structured according to 1614 model… SUPPORT LOST OVERNIGHT. THIRD ESTATE SUSPECTED THE FIRST AND SECOND ESTATES WANTED TO KEEP POWER FOR THEMSELVES INSTEAD OF FIGHTING FOR JUSTICE FOR THW WHOLE NATION

  4. THE STRUCTURE OF 1614 • Each Estate represented • Equal number of deputies • Each Estate sat separately • Each Estate voted • Votes were counted by ‘Estate’ (ie Clergy 1 vote, Nobility 1 vote and Third Estate 1 vote) DO YOU THINK THIS IS FAIR? WHY/WHY NOT?

THIRD ESTATE DEMANDS CHANGE • Doubling of the third: doubling of the number of their deputies to the Estates General, from 300 to 600 • Voting by head • All Estates to sit together and vote as individuals • 5 December 1788: King announces decision to double representation but keep voting by chamber Would this satisfy the Third Estate? Why / Why not?
