What were we preparing for? Cairns LibrarySummer 2012 Knowledge Centre Summer 2012 • Reduce floor space – remove 960 m of journal shelves • Move book collection to temporary location • Move book collection to new location • Keep library service running • Reduce floor space – remove 86 m of journal shelves • Pack books and journals into boxes to move offsite • Unpack books and journals and put in new location • Keep library service running
Discarding Journals FIRST: • Offer to departments that had donated them • Offer to British Library as part of UKRR Scheme THEN: • Mark remaining earmarked journals with a cross • Stamp “WITHDRAWN” • Arrange collection • Reorganise remaining journals

Lessons Learned • Start planning early • Involve staff, define roles • Set mini-goals • Cross of Doom: Obvious, but reversible • Invest in a good vacuum cleaner
