World War 1 • Duma- Russian push for reforms and the tsar to be abdicated • 21 demands-japan gave china had to accede against their wishes leaving china feeling like a colony of japan • April 1917 usa declared war against germany and central powers • January 1917 germany said the would use unrestricted submarine warfare scaring the allied forces • 4 years of warfare • The strategic use of troops and resources came at a crucial time in the war when the rest of the countries were lagging and becoming weaker providing the boost needed to win the war for the allies
Post War • End of three empires= Ottoman, austro Hungarian and Russian • Britains imperial power limited because of to india • Internal revolution brought the chinese empire to a end during the war • British promise of Palestine to the jews to gain support against ottoman empire • development of indias self government gradually
Paris peace settlement 1919 • 32 states invited not Russia or defeated states • Borders redrawn across Europe and the middle east • Ottoman and austrohungarian empires were dissolved into other countries
League of Nations • Organization for disputes • USA refused to join • Failed to resolve complex international issues and became more anti colonialism • Britain failed to keep up promises of self government to India causing them to decalare war with Britain • Salt march- protest movement mobilized the country and reached media attention • Split up african colonies • Kellog-Briand Pact-settle disputes without warfare- pact proved meaningless • Failed to counter japans invation of china-ended league of nations
