Why do we use Antonyms? • Using synonyms and antonyms correctly enhances writing and makes writing sound better. • Authors often use antonyms to show different sides of a situation or idea. • Synonyms and Antonyms spice up the language, and sometimes even provide a more detailed focus towards meaning. • If everyone said "bad" all the time, the world would be a boring place.
Think Aloud • Let’s say I’m writing a report about James Forten. When I write about his experience on the prison ship, I think about how the experience must have changed him. • So I might write a sentence using two antonyms (opposite words) together: After he was released from the Jersey, James Forten was a young man who probably felt very old.
Practice • Working with a partner, identify on a piece of paper the antonym for each underlined word: 1. It was early morning in Philadelphia. 2. It paid fairly well and the work was steady. 3.
