Education • Attended University of California at Berkeley and worked at Hillside Elementary as a teacher’s aide • Started writing in last year of college • First book not successful, so attended law school • Passed bar exam, but chose writing full time
Family • Met wife, Carla, when he was a visiting author at a school in Texas • They were married in 1985 • Daughter, Sherre, was born in 1987 • Family members are inspirations for characters in his books
Holes • Published in 1998 • Story of a boy who is sent to a juvenile detention center for a crime he didn’t do • Winner of many major awards, including Newberry Award, National Book Award, and ALA Awards • Teaches lessons young and old should learn
