New Developments in Agricultural Equipment National Training Workshop November 15, 2006 Jackson, MS
New Developments in Agricultural Equipment • Agricultural equipment manufacturer’s are very much going after the weekend farmer, the hobby farmer, the small acreage farmer … the small farms that would be more likely to purchase compact or utility tractors, and utility vehicles
New Developments in Agricultural Equipment • Agricultural equipment manufacturer’s are also marketing more to woman, husband/wife hobby farms, and more woman operating small tractors • single woman continue to buy homes at twice the rate of single men • more couples moving to the country with woman playing larger role in the selection of outdoor equipment
New Developments in Agricultural Equipment • According to John Deere Worldwide Commercial and Consumer Equipment • woman now influence about 80% of all purchases of residential lawn and garden equipment • 80% of all recreational horse owners are woman • it’s not that woman use utility tractors any different than men, or that woman are more likely to request specific features • if you can make something “safer, simpler, and save the buyer money, you’ve got their attention”
New Developments in Agricultural Equipment What am I getting at here: • “safer and simpler” • as agricultural equipment manufacturer’s pay more attention to woman, they have to also look into improved ergonomics (different anthropometrics [the measurement of the size and proportions of the human body]) Helps everyone, including farmers and ranchers with disabilities
New Developments in Agricultural Equipment • Examples of some of the new things appearing (yes some of this is also for marketing, market share, etc., reasons) • Seeing more customization of attachments • Seeing more marketing about “ease of use” • Seeing more “other” company comparisons on their own web sites and marketing brochures
