Different levels of project sustainability:

1. Sustainability: “Detroit Head Start Asthma Project: Building Capacity to Assist Head Start Children with Asthma”

3. Organizational level:Head Start agencies expected to adopt project processes and incorporate intervention goals into their existing structure. • continued leadership within Head Start from staff participating in project development and evaluation • continued screening for asthma symptoms among children

4. Organizational level (continued) • continued provision of educational assistance and materials for parents • continued use and implementation of asthma management strategies appropriate for Head Start centers

5. Individual level:Parents with children in participating Head Start center will • increase and maintain their ability to manage asthma symptoms in their children • become better advocates when working with health care professionals

6. Individual level (continued) • work more effectively with Head Start staff to manage the child’s asthma symptoms • transfer acquired knowledge and skills to other child caregivers in their social environment

7. Community level:Parents outside the Head Start community interested in • developing networks of support for families affected by asthma • incorporating asthma education and management into community health fairs

8. Beyond the Target Community:Head Start Asthma Project has elicited interest from • the public school system • health care professionals in the surrounding community

9. Sustaining momentum of the project itself: • Staff interest in new project that extends current work throughout Detroit System
