What types of waves are there? • Light Waves • Sound Waves • Ocean Waves • Tsunami’s
Wave Demonstration • Light
Pre-assessment • What is a wave? • What is the goal of a wave? • Can you label these parts of a wave? • Wavelength • Crest • Trough • Amplitude
Waves • A few basic properties of waves • Waves transfer energy • Waves need a medium • A wave is a disturbance that carries energy through matter and space. • Energy spreads out as a wave travels
What is their medium? • Sound Waves • Ocean Waves • Light Waves
What is their energy source? • Ocean waves • Your Radio • When you talk • Light from the sun • Light from a flashlight
Waves Spreading Out? • Radio waves • Voice • Light-flashlight • Ripples in a pond.
Parts of a Wave • Crest • Trough • Wavelength • Amplitude
Review • Most waves are caused by what? • A wave is a disturbance that transmits what? • In an ocean wave, the molecules of water move which way? • Identify the medium for the following waves: • Ripples on a pond • The sound waves from a stereo speaker • Seismic waves
Types of Waves • Two main types of waves- Longitudinal and Transverse • Longitudinal Waves- Have parallel motion, waves that cause particles to move parallel to the wave motion. • Transverse-motion of the particles is perpendicular to the motion of the wave.
Parts of a transverse wave • Crest-highest point of a transverse wave. • Troughs-lowest point of a transverse wave. • Amplitude- the greatest distance that particles are displaced from their normal resting positions.
Parts of a Longitudinal Wave • Two parts of a Longitudinal Wave • Compression- areas where the wave is crowded together. • Rarefactions-areas where the wave is spread out.
Wave Measurements • Wavelength- measures the distance of two equivalent parts of a wave. • Period-measures how long it takes for one wave to pass by. • Frequency-measures the rate of vibrations.
Frequency and Period Relationship • Frequency and period are inverses of each other. • What is an inverse relationship? • Sample Problem
Relationship Between Wavelength and Period • Speed=displacement/time • Wave Speed=wavelength/period • Wave Speed=frequency x wavelength • Sample Problem
Lab Tomorrow • Identifying the different parts of different waves. • Measuring the period, frequency and wavelengths of different waves.
Rest of Class • I want you to draw a longitudinal and transverse wave. • Label the following parts. • Compression • Rarefaction • Crest • Trough • Amplitude • Wavelength • Define period and frequency. • Explain their relationship. • Wave Speed Equations
