Figurative Language Terms • Symbolism: therepresentation of something in symbolic form or the attribution of symbolic meaning or charactertosomething • Anaphora: therepetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses (form of rhetoric) • Aphorism: aterse saying embodying a general truth, or astute observation EXAMPLE: “Powertends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”(LordActon). • Rhyme: toformarhyme,asonewordor linewithanother
Alliteration: theuse of the same consonant ( consonantal alliteration ) or of a vowel,notnecessarily the same vowel ( vocalic alliteration ), at thebeginningofeach word or each stressed syllable in a line of verse, • Hyperbole: anextravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally EXAMPLE: “to wait an eternity.” • Allusion: a passing or casual reference; an incidentalmention of something,eitherdirectly or byimplication
Simile: afigure of speech in which two unlike things are explicitly compared • Metaphor: afigure of speech in which a term or phrase isapplied to somethingtowhichitis not literally applicableinorder to suggest aresemblance • Personification: theattribution of human nature or character to animals, inanimateobjects,orabstractnotions • Onomatopoeia: theformation of a word by imitationofasound • Imagery: theformation of mental images through descriptive words

SUMMATIVE • Read Cisneros’ House on Mango Street • Record five examples of figurative language from the selection • Write a personal reaction • Create your own free write using at least 3 examples of figurative language that is inspired by the piece you read, or anything creative that comes to mind
