Before the Merger • American Basketball League and National Basketball League were the first attempts at basketball leagues. • The Basketball Association of America (BAA) was founded in 1946. • Baltimore Bullets won the first ABL Title. • Minneapolis Lakers won the first NBL Title. • Philadelphia Warriors won the first BAA Title.

Creation of the NBA • On August 3rd, 1949 the NBL agreed to merge with the BAA, thus creating the National Basketball Association (NBA). • Started with only 17 franchises, a year later downsized to 11 until 1953. • 1954, the NBA reached its all time low with only 8 teams consisting of the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Royals/Kings, Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, and Nationals/76ers. • 1954 - To encourage shooting the NBA introduced a 24 second shot clock.

The NBA Today • The current commissioner of the NBA is David Stern, he started his position in 1984. • Originally a lawyer. • So far during his time as commissioner he has: • Built 28 New Arenas • Relocated Five Franchises • Created Seven new teams (Heat, Magic, etc.) • Four NBA lockouts (1995, 1996, 1998-99, and 2011)

  6. The NBA Today • Currently, the NBA has 30 franchises total (29 in the United States and one in Canada)

The NBA Today • Since the 2004-05 season, the NBA has divided 30 teams into Two conferences with Three divisions in each. • The Eastern and Western Conference • Eastern is made up of; Atlantic, Central and Southeast. • Western is made up of; Northwest, Pacific, and Southwest. • Currently the NBA has roughly 4,000 employees.

  9. NBA Random Fact • The Boston Celtics have the most NBA title wins with 17. • The Lakers (Los Angeles & Minneapolis) are the second with 16.

  11. NBA Development • National Basketball Development League (D-League) was created in 2001. • Consists of 16 different teams • 23% of current NBA players have played in the D-League • Has an All-star game and a draft.

  12. NBA Cares • NBA Cares is the league’s global community outreach initiative that addresses important social issues such as education, youth and family development, and health and wellness. The NBA and its teams support a range of programs, partners and initiatives that strive to positively impact children and families worldwide. • Created in October 2005, since then has raised over 190 Million dollars, put in 1.9 million hours of service and built more than 700 places around the world for children and families to live.

NBA Season • During a regular season each team plays 82 games (41 home & 41 away). • Each team faces each other four times within their division. • Each team plays six of the teams from the other two divisions in its conference four times, and the remaining four teams three times. • Finally, each team plays all the teams in the other conference twice apiece.

NBA Lockout • The 161-day lockout began on July 1, 2011, It delayed the start of the 2011–12 regular season from November 1 to December 25, and it reduced the regular season from 82 to 66 games. • Reason was the division of revenue and the structure of the salary cap. • During the lockout, teams could not trade, sign or contact players, and players could not access NBA team facilities, trainers or staffs. • Ended on December 8, 2011

  15. NBA Random Fact • First NBA game played was in 1946 between the Toronto Huskies and New York Knickerbockers. • First NBA title was won by the Philadelphia Warriors.
