Electromagnetism Chapter 3 Section 1
Oersted discovered . . . • When he had a current thru a wire, a compass needle moved • An electric field (current) produces a magnetic field. (electromagnetism)
This magnetic field produced by a current . . . Has 3 characteristics • 1. Can be turned on and off. • 2. Can have its direction reversed. • 3. Can have its strength changed. • A wire with a current forms a magnetic field around the wire, and when a loop is made the magnetic field is concentrated inside! To increase the mag. field, make more loops!
A A coil of wire with a current is a SOLENOID
Electromagnet - • You can increase strength of solenoid by putting a ferromagnetic material inside it (like iron or nickel). (Electromagnet) • This magnetic field can be much stronger than magnetic field of just the wire!
How do I increase the strength of my electromagnet? 1. Increase current in solenoid. 2. Add more loops to solenoid. 3. Wind the coils closer together. 4. Use a stronger ferromagnetic core.
Very common • Found in audiotapes, videotapes, hard drives, credit card, doorbells, junk yards. • Often they are used to lift heavy objects like old cars. Turn on switch to crane, pick it up, move it, and then drop it.
