A ‘Mock’ SOS Outreach Trip What the trips are really like! SCHOOL SOS: www.websitesos.com www.facebook.com/SchoolSOS www.twitter.com/SchoolSOS Don’t forget about the digital Exam-AID version, go online to watch it! (just a template..)
How do these trips actually work? Welcome to your mock SOS Outreach Trip! This PPT presentation will walk you through a typical trip. As you read this, remember that conditions vary GREATLY between our very individual communities. Take the details here with a grain of salt… Flexibility and a sense of humour are the most important characteristics on this trip!
Trip Details • Location: Rural community in Central/South America • Dates: 2 weeks in early May/late August (and sometimes reading week/spring break!) • Price: CAD 1700 – 2100 (flight incl.) • Excludes: rest days, personal spending
Travel Plan • Group flight bookings • All travel together at a set price • Meet SOS Trip Leader at airport and fly down together to then meet NGO Trip Leader
Arrival Day • NGO representative meets the group at the airport • Drive to the community in a private bus • Late afternoon/evening arrivals stay overnight in the arrival city to avoid nighttime driving
First Day in Community • Unpack! • Welcome ceremony – get to know everyone in group, community and partner org. • Game plan for the coming days: building plan, community activities, etc.
Your bed • All groups camp together in structures in the community. This means… • A community center or empty building • A donated house or church • Occasionally tents • You’re responsible for bringing your own stuff to make your bed on the floor • Sleeping mat, sleeping bag, pillow, mosquito net, teddy bear, etc.
Your bathroom • Running water is often limited in partnering communities • For bathrooms this can mean… • Cold showers or bucket showers • Self-composting latrines • Running water only at certain hours • NO toilet paper in the toilet! • Bathroom time is bonding time!
The Food • Meals are in line with local customs and availability – local women do your cooking! • This means: rice, beans, tortillas, local fruits/vegetables, occasional meat • Some participants find the diet low on protien and bring granola bars as a supplement • Water filter or bottled water provided for the group • All meals in community (but not outside) are covered in program fees
Build Days • All our partners work differently • Some with cement, others with pre-fabricated wood structures, and some with ‘eco-bricks!’ • Some use volunteers to begin projects, others use volunteers to end the project • Some have volunteers build accessories (tables, chairs), while others have you work on walls • Before your trip, ask for build-specific details (and again… go with a flexible and open mind!)
Your Neighbours • But the MOST important thing about this trip is the human investment you make as a volunteer in this project • Communities always remark on the kindness and love shown by the group • Groups learn the most from the community (rather than from the build/teaching) • Take time to get to know your neighbours! What they always remember most is your personality (not your mad building skills).
Your Neighbours • Ideas for activities in the community • Bubbles! • Soccer/baseball game • Cooking classes (learn something local, share something from your culture) • Swap English-for-Spanish lessons • Hike around the community • Community dances or parties
Rest Days • Each group takes 2 rest days during the trip • Visit nearby tourist sites to relax and explore the rest of the country Rest days costs are external to program fees
Final Day • Goodbye ceremony with community • Donations to community given • Bus together to the airport • Extended travelers say goodbye to the group at the airport • Group travelers fly home together
