  1. What is the moon made of?Lesson 22

  2. We can see the moon at night.

  3. Sometimes we can even see the moon during the day!

  4. A long time ago people told stories about the Moon to explain its light, movement and changes in shape.

  5. The Romans believed that the moon was the goddess Diana inside a pale, silvery chariot . They believed she rode across the heavens each night.

  6. If the moon was covered by clouds and could not be seen, the Romans would say Diana was hunting on Earth, and left the night sky dark while she hunted the animals.

  7. In Burma, some people believed that the Moon was a silver rabbit that lived in a box. On the first night after the new Moon, the rabbit would open the box to peek out a little.

  8. He would gradually open the lid wider until he was completely out of the box, at the full Moon!

  9. The rabbit would then reenter the box slowly, until he was all the way in, at the new Moon. The lid would then shut, and the night would be completely dark!

  10. There were also stories about the “face” in the Moon.

  11. There are also folktales that say the moon is made of cheese!

  12. The surface of the moon is different than the Earth.

  13. The Moon has with no trees or rivers like the Earth.

  14. Astronauts have visited the moon. The first time someone walked on the moon was on July 20, 1969.

  15. The moon is made of rock and dust. This is a picture of a foot print one of the astronauts made when they visited the moon.

  16. No one lives on the moon. There is no air and very little gravity. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGMEn0FFQvw

  17. The moon is covered with craters.

  18. The craters are caused when meteorites (or big space rocks) hit the surface of the Moon.

  19. The meteorites cause the craters, which are actually large indentions in the moons surface.

  20. All the planets have moons except the two closet to the sun, Mercury and Venus.

  21. Jupiter and Saturn are the two largest planets. They both have around 50 moons each!

  22. The moon is not a planet. It is called a satellite.

  23. But just like a planet the moon does not give light.

  24. The moon shines because the light from the sun bounces off of it. The moon reflects the sun’s light. It is similar to a mirror.

  25. The Sun is a ball of hot, glowing gas. The Moon is a ball of cold, hard rock.

  26. The Moon is like a giant mirror. The light it sends to the Earth is light that is reflected from the Sun!

  27. Let’s answer the worksheet, The Moon. I will read the questions. Once you have answered the worksheet we can review the answers.

  28. Today we learned about the Moon’s surface. In our next lesson we will talk about how the moon changes shape.

  29. Keep observing the world around you!
