What leads to the Great Migration? • Jim Crow Laws • Agricultural difficulties that lead to a lower demand for farm labor in the South • Decline in immigration, draft of soldiers, and an increase in wartime labor demand drew African-Americans north to industrial cities.
What are the characteristics of the Harlem Renaissance? • Overt racial pride. • What does this mean? • Intellectual and artistic expression • Direct challenges to racism and stereotypes
However…the Harlem Renaissance was not one unified movement! It had cultures within the culture such as different class movements and different ideas about assimilation, integration, and acculturation How might this play out?
