What is cancer? • Uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body, malignant tumor. • Normally, cells multiply and die off when needed. Cancer is when this process goes wrong. • It can happen in almost any organ or tissue in the body.
What is cancer? • There are12.7 million new cancer cases and 7.6 million deaths globally each year. • Men: prostate, lung, and colon • Women: breast, lung and colon • Lung cancer has the highest death rate for both men and women.
Causes/Risk Factors • Chemicals, environmental toxins, radiation • Obesity, lack of exercise/poor diet • Excessive alcohol consumption • Sunlight exposure • Genetics/hormones • Viruses • Many causes are still unknown.
Symptoms • Symptoms specific to type of cancer. • Many cases are asymptomatic until it’s too late. Making it very important to get regular screenings as recommended by your doctor.
Preventative measures • Healthy diet and regular exercise • Limiting alcohol consumption • Maintaining a healthy weight • Minimizing exposure to toxic chemicals and radiation
