Faculty Development: Increasing Accessibility Awareness One Certificate at a Time Equity & Excellent: Access in Higher Education 2019 Conference
What started the conversation? • In 2014 several South Carolina schools were hit with complaints that prompted reviews (and action) by Office of Civil Rights (OCR). • The NC Community College System (NCCCS) was alerted to the complaints and decided to be pro-active. • In September 2014 the NCCCS hosted a 2-day Accessibility Symposium with speaker, Dr. Judith Risch, J.D., Ph.D, attorney with the Department of Education responsible for the investigation and enforcement of Federal civil rights laws, including Title IX, Title VI, the Americans with Disability Act, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. • At the symposium all 58 colleges were charged with creating and implementing a 5-year plan.
