What is reading? • A complex system of deriving meaning from text that requires: Phonemic awareness Vocabulary Fluency Comprehension
Phonics/Phonemic Awareness • Phonics is connecting the sounds of spoken English to written letters or groups of letters • Sounds-Letters-Words • -at, cat, bat, splat
Fluency • Reading quickly, accurately, and with expression • Rate+Accuracy=Fluency • Fluent readers are able to focus their attention on understanding the text
Vocabulary • Words and their meanings • Improves comprehension, communication, and social confidence
Writing • It is a way to communicate, express ideas, and to organize and reflect on our lives • Better readers become better writers • Reading and Writing are two different ways of learning about the same thing (composing messages)
Comprehension • Process of constructing meaning from text • Requires decoding and background knowledge to understand what the writer has written
