  1. Reading with your child St. Brides Major Church-in-Wales Primary School

  2. Aims of this workshop • To ensure that parents understand how the reading system operates in school. • To inform parents of our aims and objectives for the coming academic year with reading. • To give ideas how families can support reading at home. • To answer any questions or concerns.

  3. At St. Brides we wish to encourage all to ‘love, learning for life’. • In evaluating our reading results and the results of lesson observations, listening to learner interviews and teacher self evaluation, we found that pupil attitude to reading was not as we would like it to be. There were a number of reluctant readers causing us concern. • Our evaluations also brought to light a lack of consistency in the school reading scheme and links to home regarding reading.

  4. School Development Plan • The SDP is an improvement plan which has a number of priority targets for the academic year. • Reading is usually part of one of the Global targets on the school development plan. • Explanation of SDP – any questions? Let’s think about our own experiences!

  5. Do you remember?????? • Your favourite stories? (Discuss them!) • Stories told to you – retelling stories is wonderful, handing them down through the family. Children love the stories you tell – especially the ones about about them! • Traditional Tales • Reading before bed? Yes or no?

  6. And so to books……..

  7. What sort of books? • Old or new. • Comics and magazines. • Fiction and Non-fiction. • Books that once belonged to you. ANYTHING WITHIN REASON!

  8. School Reading Scheme

  9. How can you help? You know all this but it would really help if you could: • Listen to your child read their home reading book. • Encourage them with other reading material at home. • Ensure that they are read to.

  10. Thank you! • Mrs Davies will explain how to cope with any problems with reading at home and how we help pupils with reading difficulties at school. • Please remember: WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU SO PLEASE ASK IF YOU WOULD LIKE ADVICE OR SUPPORT!
