Research Context and SLAM Methodology Annabel Davis TRL Limited
Study Locations • The transect corridors comprise distances of 80km between the capital and secondary city and are located in: • Zimbabwe: Harare-Bindura • Uganda: Kampala-Jinja • Study locations were based on the following criteria: • nature of recent occupational change • degree of urbanisation • nature of rural-urban linkages • changing prevalence of poverty
Research Design • The methodology endeavours to: • Discern patterns of movement on the basis of economic strata • Focus on how the poor combine their mobility options with livelihood pursuits • Examine the premise that the poor’s mobility is restricted whilst their diversified livelihood strategies are requiring them to be more mobile
Research Methodology: Phase 1 Identification of transect corridor and general mobility patterns • Four sites were chosen to compare and contrast the transport modality choices and mobility patterns of household members: 1. Capital city (squatter settlement) 2. Peri-urban area 3. Village 4. Secondary city
Methodology: Phase 1 • Collection of background data and statistics on Zimbabwe and Uganda • Key informant interviews • Focus group interviews • Inventory of local transport services
Research Methodology: Phase 2 Studied the relationship between transport modal choice and daily life by economic strata • Phase 2 incorporated a household survey of transport modes, trip purpose and economic livelihoods along the transect corridor: • Capital city centre: 90 households • Peri-urban area: 90 households • Village: 90 households • Secondary city: 90 households • 30 high/middle/low income households to be interviewed in each location
Research Methodology: Phase 3 Survey of transport-livelihood inter-relationships • Phase 3 surveyed a small select sample of households to ascertain the inter-connections between mobility patterns and livelihood pursuits and included: • transport activities of household members over the past week • origin/destinations, duration, mode of transport, cost etc • attitudes: transport constraints and needs • income/expenditure for one week period
