Section 2.1 Polynomials
Polynomials • Polynomials- in terms of x is an expression that can be written in the form: • USUALLY WRITE POLYNOMIALS IN DECENDING ORDER! • Example:
Polynomials • Leading Term: The term containing the highest power of x • Leading Coefficient: The coefficient of the leading term • Degree: The degree of the polynomial is the power of x in the leading term. Leading Term Degree Leading Coefficient
Roots of Polynomials • Polynomials are often referred to as P(x) • P(x)=0 is a root of the equation, also called: • Zero of the function • X-Intercepts • Example: Find the zeros of the function:
Is f a polynomial? • Tell whether it is a polynomial • Give each value of x for which f is undefined • Give the zeros of f
Polynomials • We can substitute not only numbers, but also variable expressions into polynomials. • Find p(2) and p(-3n)
SYNTHETIC SUBSTITUTION • 1. Write in descending order. • 2. Fill in 0’s where an x term is missing • 3. Start with the leading coefficient • 4. Multiply by the value of x & add to next coefficient • 5. Repeat step 4 until last coefficient is reached. • EXAMPLE 3: Pg 55 • FIND P(2) if
EXAMPLE #3b Pg. 55 • Find S(-2) if
