  1. The Project GAmma SPectroscopy and PArticle Detection D. Beaumel, IPNO FREEDAC meeting, March 26th, 2008

  2. CONCEPT GAmma SPectroscopy and PArticle Detection Integrated 4p (particle) + 4p (g) • Energy resolution with SPIRAL2 beams Thicker targets • Multireaction capab. • Improve PID for low E particles • Modularity Coupling with other devices (neutron, AGATA,..)

  3. SPECTRO BTD1 BTD2 Solution : gate recoil particles by given gamma transition(s) High efficiency • Better than 50 keV • Thicker targets Trigger : light particle Missing mass measurements • Exotic Beam + light target (CH2,CD2) • Detect the light recoiling particle (E,Q)LAB(E*, QCM ) CH2 CD2 Elastic, inelastic Radioactive beam Pickup reactions (p,d),(d,t),(d,3he), (d,6Li),… Stripping (d,p) DX, DY~1mm, DE ~ 50 keV • Good angular distributions ! • Energy resolution limited by: - dEx/dErecoil < 1 - Target thickness Hardly get better than 200keV

  4. Missing mass Measurements -- 2 • Unbound recoil particle Ex: (d,2He), (d,6Li*), (a,6Be), (a,8Be), … 2p a+d a+2p 2a • Multiplicity : 2 or 3 • Strongly correlated particles • Missing mass with associated particles : Ex: 8He + d → 3He + 7H t + 4n 19Ne + p → p’ + 19Ne* a + 15O E (4n) Jp Such reactions impact the granularity of 2nd stage

  5. Complete kinematics Measurements Target Radioactive beam Fragment Decay Particles g-rays Ex: Nuclear clustering and nuclear molecules states in 12Be by 12C(8He,6He + 6He) 11B by 7Li(8He,7Li + a) Trigger : Spectro need position resolution: 100 µm Kanada-En’yo, Horiuchi et al. Foreseen at SPIRAL2 : Search for very exotic molecular configurations using intense neutron rich C and Ne beams -Multiparticle correlation measurements - Detection of neutrons and gammas useful

  6. Coupling with other detectors • Coupling with neutron detectors • (d,n), (3He,n) recoil in backward hemisphere problem: How to get accurate angular distrib.? • Complete kinematics measurements • Nuclear breakup • Near barrier reactions Mainly forward angles • Coupling with AGATA Foreseen for high resolution experiments previously discussed : GASPARD in ½ hemisphere AGATA in ½ hemisphere

  7. 3-stage concept LaBr3/CsI Si-pad Si-DSSD ~ 15000 channels Particle Array Specifications • Position resolution • 500 mm resolution over ~4p • 5mm for 2nd stage • 100 mm in forward direction • Energy resolution – dynamic range • < 40 keV • 100 keV – 1 GeV • Multidynamic ranges and shaping • low threshold • good linearity • Particle ID • 0.2-2MeV/u: TOF (DT~200ps) • PSD above 1.5-2 MeV/u • E-DE beyond punch-through • Low Mass budget • Low g-ray absorption in the mechanics and FEE • but lots of electronics channels → A CHALLENGE ! Shorter flight distance → more compact !

  8. SPIRAL2 =0.10 E/E=10% 5% 3% 1% Gamma Array Specifications • Energie resolution • better than 50 keV (FWHM) for 1 MeV gamma-rays • Dynamic range • 0.1 to 5 MeV for gamma-rays • Stops high energy light particles (~100MeV) • Total detection efficiency • ~ 75% for 1 MeV gammas • Granularity NOT determined by Doppler • Multiparticle events detection • Particle-gamma pile-up • Technical aspects (size of APD/PMT,…)

  9. E.Pollacco

  10. R&D Program ** • Simulations • Optimisation of GASPARD geometry • Granularity / position resolution • Reconstructed energy resolution • Particle array • PSD • First stage DSSD, • Thick Si with pads, nTD Si • Electronics • ASIC definition • Large dynamic range preamps - PSD • Low time-energy thresholds • PSD: Fast digit. • Time stamping and selective readout • Gamma Array • Scintillators: CsI, LaCl2, LaBr3 • readout: PMT, APD • pulse shape analysis • Targets • Cryogenic H2 and D2 • Cryogenic 4He and 3He • Polarized targets • Mechanics • Integration of p and g arrays, electronics • Reduction of inactive volume • Integration of special targets • Miscellaneous • Test benches • Tests with beams • GASPARD in gas ** ** ** ** ** =synergies with PARIS
