'Biodiversity-Facility Level' Analysis in a Habitat Island- Yushan National Park, Taiwan Ching Lin & Lan-Sheng Kuo Dep’t of Environment Resources Management The Overseas Chinese Institute of Technology, TAIWAN
INTORDUCTION • Biodiversity (a contraction of biological diversity) is one of Taiwanese attempt to capture the complexity of life, and is so doing to further an understanding it and of its maintenance. In order to protect the essential biodiversity resources, there are 6 national parks , of which were successively set up since 1982. YuShan National Park (YSNP)– a mountainous and watershed park—has 105,490 hectares, which is the largest national park in terms of its area.
Mt. YuShan • Mt. YuShan , a 3952 meters high in YSNP, is the highest mountain in the Northeastern Asia. Because plenty of ecological and genetic diversity in YSNP, which are the basic building blocks of biodiversity. In order to understand the effect of facilities to be built the past years, on the biodiversity maintaining, we intend to investigate the adaptation of current facilities as references for the new construction proposal.
Loss of Biodiversity (Crisis) • The richness of biodiversity in YSNP is very high. Unfortunately, the increased number of tourists visiting YSNP has brought damage to the ecological conservation, i.e. the gradual extinction of Formosan Black Bear and Mikado Pheasant, to some extents. The present and projected losses of biodiversity have been called a “crisis”..
Biodiversity Crisis Biodiversity Crisis should relate to the facility established in a national park
Various Biodiversity Facilities in Yushan National Park • We take arguably the “Evaluation of the effect of varying biodiversity facilities (i.e., forest trails, accommodations, pavilions, facilities in rest area and view platforms) which had built in YSNP for the past years on maintaining the biodiversity ”.
Facilities must Meet the Requirements of Ecological conservation • We look forward to give the officers of YSNP some suggestive advice to prepare advisable budget, by which can best meet the requirements of ecological conservation and as reference for the future biodiversity facilities establishment from 2004 to 2007.
Methods Research articles described On-site investigation for biodiversity facilities in YSNP and data analysis Determine the main research method On-site investigation Consultants on this study On-site interview and information analysis Consultants’ seminars & workshop Discussion & Conclusion
RESUTLTS AND DISCUSSIONS • Planned Facilities Can Avoid Damaging the Biodiversity Resources in YSNP (See table 1)
Kinds and quantities of ecological conservation research publications in YSNP from 1982 to 2003
Roads & Forest trails • The total area of roads and forest trails has the largest percentage of area in YSNP.
Facilities to be Set Up • Communication and medical treatment in high mountain area • Control center and subsidiary facilities • Ecological monitoring system
Conclusion • Ecological conservation first • Permanent vegetation ecological sample plot • To understand the environmental shift • Increasing the biodiversity apparatus of the current ecological station. • Long-term ecological research • Set up climbing museum • New cable car to Mt. Yushan
