GEOSS Common Infrastructure (1) GEOSS consists of a global and flexible network of content providers and aims at providing decision-support tools to a wide variety of users. • A set of core components and functions, known as the GEOSS Common Infrastructure or GCI, were designed and deployed to: • Allow GEOSS resources (e.g. systems, data, services) to be easily discovered and accessed • Improve interoperability for existing and future observation systems • Build an Open Infrastructure in accordance with the GEOSS Data Sharing Principles

GEOSS Common Infrastructure (2) The GEOSS Common Infrastructure (GCI) offers the following capabilities: • A GEO Web Portal (GWP) that provides GEOSS users with a “one-stop” discovery and access function to all GEOSS resources • A brokering-based architecture based on a Discovery and Access Broker (DAB) to discover and access registered resources • A set of registries of GEOSS components, services, standards, requirements and best practices • Within the GCI the GWP implements the functionality related to the presentation layer whilst the DAB implements the functionality related to the processing layer. GEOSS Common Infrastructure (2) As main enabler of the System of Systems principles and capabilities, the GCI is able to interface with external systems to facilitate end users in discovering and accessing the services and resources.

GCI Evolution • GCI is being enhanced for the GEO Ministerial Summit: “Sprint to Ministerial, StM” • StM will make GEOSS more functional for users • More datasets discoverable and accessible through the GCI New GWP Home and Results Pages • New 2-D Map for discovery & Visualization • News and Community Sections; Social • Semantic Search • Filter and Order by Results, Icons Grouping • Improved results ranking

  9. Data/Resources Providers: What can GCI do for you? • 1. Make your data and resources widely discoverable and accessible by connecting your data/information system to GEOSS • GEO Users will be able to discover and access the data and services you want to share (e.g. GEOSS Data-CORE) • You do not have to implement any required common specification or protocol (GCI Brokering Framework) • How? • Provide your information/data system URL address and interfaces specifications to GEO • Go to http://geossregistries.info/geosspub/

Help you in finding and accessing the EO data and resources you need through your own portal • GCI provides a framework where to connect your preferred client/portal and discover, retrieve, and use multidisciplinary data • You do not have to modify your client implementing any required common specification or protocol • How? • Ask GEO for the URL address of the GCI Brokering Framework

GCI Future Vision • Technologies landscape continuously evolving • Heterogeneous and scattered landscape in terms of data providers with different systems, interfaces, formats, etc.. • Different User Communities with different requirements and needs to be addressed by GEOSS & GCI: different Usage Patterns to be supported • GCI evolution should aim at a flexible architecture: • with a modular approach, i.e. a set of interoperable components that respond to the community needs • able to evolve through new components emerging from the technology landscape, however rapidly this is evolving

Activities towards StS (2) • Enhancement of GEO Web Portal (GWP) layout • Consolidation of GWP/DAB interface to allow: • a better presentation of search results to users (e.g. data at collection and granule level) • full use of existing multilingual and semantically-enriched searches • full use of existingtransformation services supporting access • launch of 'helper' software for desktop visualization or analysis • Facilitation of data exploitability through the availability of data processing tools/services & community customizable Components • Data access improvement after discovery (Data Providers support needed): • through the availability of links to services or to data in the metadata • possibility to preview the data before accessing • Improvement of DAB algorithm for results ranking to enhance matching with user queries. Transparency of criteria to users & providers • Promoting interconnectivity between Community Portals and GEOSS for improved use of GEOSS resources by SBA users

Activities towards StS (3) • Consolidation of services monitoring approach and tools. • Discussion of possible approaches for User registration and authentication in the GCI and feasibility assessment • Increase the number of discoverable and accessible EO data resources through consolidating GCI interfaces with remote EO data discovery/access systems (e.g. CWIC and FedEO) • Set-up a user testing session during the 2014 Ministerial Summit • Address, in cooperation with the GEO Secretariat & Data Providers: • the implementation of recommendations regarding the placement of license information in the metadata and their realization during data discovery in the GCI • the implementation of use metrics, and develop or enhance a GCI component to capture the metrics and allow reporting of them • increasing the registration of socioeconomic, time series, and modeling resources in GEOSS to support contextual use of EO data for societal benefits • increasing the registration of higher level products
