Plans For the First Release of American Community Survey 5-year Estimates Prepared for the Joint Meetings of the SDC and CIC Steering Committees February 2010
ACS 5-year EstimatesRelease Restrictions • For most ACS 5-year data products there are no population thresholds • There are some disclosure-related release restrictions, most of which apply only to block group data
ACS 5-year EstimatesRelease Restrictions • We will not filter the 5-year estimates based on the reliability of the estimates • We will continue to provide margins of error with all ACS estimates and user education to aid users in using less reliable estimates wisely
Which data products, summary levels, and tables will be included in the first ACS 5-year release?
Derived Products Data & narrative profiles, subject tables, geographic comparison tables & thematic maps Detailed Tables (released as tables in AFF and in summary file format from the AFF download center) ACS Microdata
Detailed tables Summary files Data profiles Narrative profiles Subject tables Geographic comparison tables Thematic maps Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) files ACS 5-year EstimatesData Products Included
Comparison profiles State ranking tables Selected population profiles ACS 5-year EstimatesData Products Excluded
ACS 5-year EstimatesSummary Levels • Most, but not all, of the summary levels in Census 2000 Summary File 3 will be included in the first ACS 5-year release • This includes geographic components and geographic intersections
ACS 5-year EstimatesSummary Levels • Residence-based tabulations • The same summary levels that were included in the 3-year estimates (such as congressional districts, counties, places, school districts) plus new summary levels (such as tracts, block groups) • Workplace and migration tabulations • The same summary levels that were included in the 3-year estimates
ACS 5-year EstimatesData Product Limitations by Summary Level • For proposed summary levels, we will always produce detailed tables • We will only produce derived products such as data and narrative profiles, subject tables and geographic comparison tables for a subset of the full set of summary levels
ACS 5-year EstimatesNumber of Summary Levels by Data Product
ACS 5-year EstimatesSet of Proposed Tables • We will produce the ACS tables that are most comparable to those released in Census 2000 Summary File 3 • We will also produce some tables that were not included in Census 2000 – new tables that were designed after Census 2000
ACS 5-year EstimatesSet of Proposed Tables • Most proposed summary levels will receive a full set of 5-year tables regardless of size or type – exception is block groups • Some tables have geographic restrictions similar to those in place for Census 2000 Summary File 3
ACS 5-year EstimatesNumber of tables and estimates proposed for release (excluding block groups)
ACS 5-year EstimatesNumber of tables and estimates proposed for release (block groups only)
ACS 5-year EstimatesData Dissemination Plan • We will disseminate all ACS data products through the American FactFinder • We plan to release census block group data only in a summary file format, accessible from the American FactFinder download center
ACS 5-year EstimatesPeriodicity of Release • We plan to release ACS 5-year tabulated data products every year • We currently are proposing that 5-year PUMS files be produced this year and next year but not necessarily produced every year
