  2. FORMS OF GOVERNMENT MONARCHIES ALL MONARCHS GAIN POWER THROUGH BLOODLINE!!!!!!! THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF MONARHIES Constitutional Monarchs: monarchs DO NOT have total control over the government. Monarch’s powers are limited by a Constitution or Parliament (legislature elected by the people of the nation) Absolute Monarchs: monarchs has full control over the government. There are NO LIMTS on the powers of an absolute monarch. Most Monarchs believed in the Devine Right of Kings—the belief that they were chosen to lead by God Monarch Titles: King, Queen, Czar, Czarina, Emperor, Empress

FORMS OF GOVERNMENT Dictatorships Dictators typically gain power through MILITARY FORCE Coup d Etat: military overthrow of the government Examples: Adolf Hitler in Germany, Vladimir Lenin in Russia, Benito Mussolini in Italy Power of the Dictator: a dictator has complete control over the government Rights of the People: citizens living under a dictatorship have little to no rights The only way to remove a dictator or ABSOLUTE monarch from power is through a revolution In some dictatorships citizens have the right to vote on their leader…the problem is they are usually given the choice of only ONE candidate…the dictator currently in charge!

  4. FORMS OF GOVERNMENT Democracy A Democracy is a government ruled BY THE PEOPLE!!!!!!! There are three types of Democracies Direct Democracy: the people of the nation get to directly vote on all maters affecting them. Representative Democracy: the people of a nation elect representatives to make decisions for them. (UNITED STATES) Parliamentary Democracy: Democratic form of government in which the party with the greatest representation in the parliament (legislature) forms the government, its leader becoming prime minister. (has similar powers to our President) The power of the government in a Democracy is limited by a Constitution that specifically lists the power of the government and REGULAR ELECTIONS where citizens can vote leaders out of office who are not properly doing their job!

FORMS OF GOVERNMENT Theocracy A Theocracy is a government in which the ruler is also the head of an organized church and uses Church law to govern the country A theocratic leader has full control over the government and therefore functions like a dictatorship! THER IS NO SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE IN A THEOCRACY! BEST EXAMPLE OF A THEORCACY: The Vatican. Its leader is the head of the nation and the Holy Roman Catholic Church……THE POPE!

A lot of the questions will test your knowledge of the similarities and differences between the different forms of government! A lot of the questions will test your knowledge of the similarities and differences between the different forms of government! from a theocracy to an absolute monarchy B. from a presidential democracy to a dictatorship C. from a dictatorship to a constitutional monarchy D. from a parliamentary democracy to a theocracy A government was chosen by the majority party in the legislature. The people revolted and established a new government in which the ruler was chosen by religious elders and used power to enforce religious law. How did the system of government change?

The following is an example of a 2 point writing question on the OGT. A group of citizens organizes a peaceful march through the streets of their nation’s capital. They carry signs calling for the nation’s leader to resign. Describe how likely this type of protest could be held in a presidential democracy and in a dictatorship. Explain the reason for these differences. Write your answer in the Answer Document. (2 points) POTENTIAL WRITTEN RESPONSE This type of protest would be allowed in a presidential democracy because citizens have freedoms of speech guaranteed under a Constitution. This type of protest would never be allowed under a dictatorship because people do not have many rights and would be punished for speaking out against the government .
