  1. Chapter 27, Section 1Early Difficulties Objectives: Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the Allied and Axis Powers in 1941 . Outline the steps that the United States took to prepare for war. Identify locations where the Japanese military attacked after Pearl Harbor. Discuss the early turning points of the war in the Pacific. Relate the major battles in Europe and North Africa in 1942

  2. Strengths and Weaknesses Axis Powers – Germany and Japan had secure hold on areas they invaded. • Germany and Japan were better prepared for war. (Why?) Allied Powers – Axis spread from France to Soviet Union and from Norway to Africa. - Germany fighting a two front war – Britain and the Soviet Union.

  3. Mobilizing for War After Pearl Harbor the U.S. switched from a peacetime to a wartime economy. (What do you think that would require?) • Increased production – manufacturing and farming • Unions agreed not to strike Ammunition, shells, rifles, planes, tanks, subs, aircraft, etc. Massive increase ended the Great Depression

  6. Mobilizing for War War required an expansion of the federal government. (Liberal or Conservative?) War required expansion of government controlled economy. Sell war bonds to keep inflation down. More money to spend but less products to buy = high prices. Selective Training and Service Act – provided for the first peacetime draft in U.S. history

  7. War in the Pacific The Battle of the Coral Sea – important Allied victory. The Battle of Midway – second major battle in the pacific. Guadalcanal – 1st major offensive of the U.S.
