Hydrates • Ahydrate is an ionic compound (usually crystalline) that has water molecules in its solid structure. • EX: CaSO4•2H20 calcium chloridedihydrate
Working with Hydrates • Anhydrous compound = When all the hydrating water is removed by heat( ) Symbol for heat • If the formula of the anhydrouscompoundis known, you can determine the formula of the hydrate. • % composition is based on the amount of water in the hydrate.
Naming Hydrates • There are two parts to naming hydrates: • First, name the ionic compound.(This is the compound on the left side of the dot.) • Next, determine how many water molecules are present. Use the molecular prefixes to indicate the number of water molecules in the hydrate. (prefix-hydrate) • Ex 1) CaCl2•2H20 calcium chloridedihydrate • Ex 2) Na2SO4•6H2O sodium sulfatehexahydrate • Ex 3) MnSO3•H2O manganese (II)sulfite monohydrate
Heating the crystal in a crucible drives off the water then the salt is called anhydrous MnSO4•H2OMnSO4 + H2O
