From Gold to Lead to Diamonds“I didn’t have the words…..” Recovery was something I finally decided. It had nothing to do with how my treatment was arranged, but how my mind had become arranged because those that were serving me made me feel useful and respected. That’s the POINT……The first opportunity to serve is upon the first point of contact. It is there “We” make a decision. thehouseofsharon@msn.com
From Gold to Lead to Diamonds “As my sufferings mounted I soon realized that there were two ways in which I could respond to my situation - either to react with bitterness or seek to transform the suffering into a creative force. I decided to follow the latter course.” ~ Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. thehouseofsharon@msn.com
From Gold to Lead to Diamonds My Ace Score was 8. My life was littered with jail, institution and mental health hospital because of my childhood trauma . That trauma led to self-soothing or self-regulating behaviors. But I decided to BE the change I wanted to see in the world and let the woman in the mirror be my motivator”. thehouseofsharon@msn.com
From Gold to Lead to Diamonds Society cannot understand because victims don't tell; victims don't tell because society does not understand.” Mary Ann Ricciardi An Exercise in Conditioning …. thehouseofsharon@msn.com
From Gold to Lead to Diamonds“USING ART AS A HEALING TOOL” 7 Every opportunity is an opportunity to make an impact on someone’s life. Every part of a puzzle is needed to bring it all together. thehouseofsharon@msn.com
From Gold to Lead to Diamonds “Being Trauma Informed and Creating Trauma Informed systems of care is about three things and many, Leadership, Relationships & Ownership”
From Gold to Lead to Diamonds Reflecting on the systems that served me, I realize how traumatized most of them were. Systems have to be willing to heal. Most of them are…This is a good thing. Being Trauma Informed isn’t about giving excuses for behavior, but offering a form of explanation for it . thehouseofsharon@msn.com
From Gold to Lead to Diamonds "It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men and women.” - Frederick Douglass “Just imagine the world I had to create for myself because my caretaker was also my abuser.” thehouseofsharon@msn.com
From Gold to Lead to Diamonds The truth about childhood is stored up in our bodies where trauma resides. Becoming trauma informed or creating trauma informed systems of care has nothing to do with what you believe about it, but how you behave about it. Wise 2012 thehouseofsharon@msn.com
From Gold to Lead to Diamonds When trauma is not addressed, the cost to the SYSTEMS….Priceless According to SAMHSA 2009 report, the Annual Cost of Child Abuse Services totaled in the Billions.
Cost of Unaddressed Trauma to the System Total Direct Cost-$ 24,384,347,302 Total Indirect Cost-$ 69,692,535,227 Total Cost-$ 94,076,882,526 “Child abuse casts a shadow the length of a lifetime.” Herbert Ward
From Gold to Lead to Diamonds Trauma Specific Treatment changed my life for the better. Focusing directly on the trauma, led to positive Recovery outcomes. I accept I have the power to change myself and systems into becoming more trauma informed! thehouseofsharon@msn.com
From Gold to Lead to Diamonds I learned how to advocate for myself and engaged other people with lived experience in my recovery. Reciprocal Peer Support is at the foundation of my Recovery and Healing. thehouseofsharon@msn.com
Relationships with those we serve grow organically. Peer Support is Power support. People connect when they have things in common. Use those you serve in every aspect of your organization. From the start, the middle and the end. Wherever “We” are being served is where “We” can serve!
From Gold to Lead to Diamonds • A few things that worked and helped me in my recovery and healing…. • Feeling Useful • Showing and being shown respect & dignity • Opportunity to be apart of “something” and “someone” else life • Educational & Job Training Opportunities
From Gold to Lead to Diamonds(Continue, Things That Worked) • Safe & Affordable Housing • Treatment that was created out of a “Partnership” and based on my assets, not deficits. • Alternatives to traditional treatment and therapy. • Learning positive ways to self-sooth and self-regulate.
From Gold to Lead to Diamonds“Art led to Systems, Class & Individual Advocacy” We MUST go from “Stakeholder” to “Shareholder” and change our language from “Got to” to “Get to”…
From Gold to Lead to Diamonds We start off Gold…..Babies are resilient. We are effected by our adverse childhood experience and feel like lead. And then we turn into Diamonds, getting the support, nurturing care and the opportunity to feel useful and respected. I realize that I am a miracle: A miracle is an effect or extraordinary event in the physical world that surpasses all known human or natural powers and is ascribed to a supernatural cause: such an effect or event manifesting or considered as a work of God; a wonder; marvel; a wonderful or surpassing example of some quality. Guess what? You are all Miracle workers….Thank you
