  1. Unit 4

  2. God as Father to All Baptized: First Person of the Trinity • Christians are baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit • For there is only one God, the Almighty Father, his only Son and Holy Spirit… • God has mercy on those who desires truth for all men

  3. Jesus the Christ: Second Person of the Trinity • Jesus revealed that God is Father in an unheard-of sense: "No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." CCC 240 • Jesus is the Son of God and Mary • Read and summarize CCC 456-469

  4. Cont… • 'But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.' He has fulfilled the promise he made to Abraham and his descendants. CCC 422 • Why did God do this? • What does it mean that Jesus freely accepted suffering for us?

  5. Holy Spirit: Third Person of the Trinity • Before his Passover, Jesus announced the sending of "another Paraclete" (Advocate), the Holy Spirit. CCC 243 • At work since creation, having previously "spoken through the prophets", the Spirit will now be with and in the disciples, to teach them and guide them "into all the truth". CCC 243

  6. Cont… Council of Constantinpole • One who confessed the teachings of the Holy Spirit. • The apostolic faith concerning the Spirit was confessed by the second ecumenical council at Constantinople. CCC 245 • Different from the Council of Nicea which was Christ centered

  7. Dogma of the Holy Trinity • The divine Unity is Triune. • We do not confess three Gods, but one God in three persons, the "consubstantial Trinity"

  8. Heresy • Unorthodox religious opinion: an opinion or belief that contradicts established religious teaching, especially one that is officially condemned by a religious authority. • Heretics hold their views to be true • Example: Real Presence

  9. Types of Heresy • Gnosticism: The doctrine of salvation by knowledge • Arianism: The Son, though he may be the most perfect of creations, was only a creation of God the Father. • Nestorianiam: Jesus is two distinct persons, human and divine • Monophysitism: The person of Jesus there was but a single, divine nature

  10. Mary’s Role • Catechism 499-511 • Jesus has only God as Father. "He was never estranged from the Father because of the human nature which he assumed. . . He is naturally Son of the Father as to his divinity and naturally son of his mother as to his humanity, but properly Son of the Father in both natures.“ CC 503 • She uttered her yes "in the name of all human nature.” By her obedience she became the new Eve, mother of the living. CCC 511

  11. Mary • Feast of the Annunciation: the part which Mary took in the Redemption. Angel Gabriel's announcement to Mary that she would conceive Jesus, and the conception of Jesus by the Holy Spirit at that moment. • Beliefs • 1. The Church has always professed her belief in the perpetual virginity of Mary • 2. The Church traditionally presents Mary as "virgin before, during and after giving birth

  12. Challenge of the Dogma of Mary • Mary's virginity after the birth is denied by the Gospel texts which record the existence of four "brothers of Jesus": James, Joseph, Simon and Judas (Mt 13:55-56; Mk 6:3), and of several sisters. • It should be recalled that no specific term exists in Hebrew and Aramaic to express the word "cousin", and that the terms "brother" and "sister", therefore had a far broader meaning which included several degrees of relationship.

  13. Study Guide • How are Catholics baptized? • Who does God have mercy on? • CCC 240 • Paraclete • Who is responsible for leading the disciples of the past and today? • Council of Constantinpole: center & purpose • Dogma of the Holy Trinity • Define Heresy and explain the four types • Mary became the new _______________? • Perpetual virginity of Mary
