History II • JIFSAN/NCFST Workshop, Oct. 28-30 • Subcommittee on Contaminants and Natural Toxicants, Dec. 4-5, 2002. • FDA presented the Draft Action Plan for comment at the public meeting and the Subcommittee meeting.
Action Plan • The Action Plan outlines FDA’s goals and planned activities on acrylamide in food over the next several years. • The Plan discusses FDA’s intentions to work with other federal agencies and participate in international efforts.
Action Plan II • The Draft plan included sections on Testing Foods, Toxicology, Formation, Methodologies, Meetings and Collaborative Projects, Consumer Messages and Regulatory Options.
Considerations in Developing the Action Plan • Scientific review at FDA and WHO indicated cause for concern • Acrylamide is a known animal carcinogen and known human neurotoxicant at high doses. • Consumption in tens of micrograms range. • Scientific review also revealed significant gaps in knowledge of acrylamide in food.
Considerations in Developing the Action Plan II • Intense worldwide interest in acrylamide in food. • Ideally, work of all parties would be coordinated. • Research indicates acrylamide is formed through traditional cooking practices.
FDA’s Overall Goal Through scientific investigation and risk management decision making, prevent and/or reduce potential risk of acrylamide in foods to the greatest extent feasible.
Ongoing Work • Plan revised in response to input by the Subcommittee. • Today, we are presenting the revised Plan to the Food Advisory Committee for assistance in finalizing the Plan.
Ongoing Work II • Projects outlined in Plan. • CCFAC, March 17-21, 2003. • WHO/FAO JECFA, 2004 (tentative).
Next Talks • Report on the Subcommittee meeting, including comments on the Action Plan. • Review the Revised Action Plan in detail.
