European Green Crab Carcinus Maenas

Introduced Species. Introduced Species are creatures that travel or are carried to a new habitat. Some cause harm to the native species. Some take over that habitat and start a new one. Introduced species can never become native to the new ecosystem.. Questions . Why is the European Green Crab a problem here and not in Europe? How is the Green Crab a problem? When was population highest? What have the costs been? How did they get here?.

    3. Questions Why is the European Green Crab a problem here and not in Europe? How is the Green Crab a problem? When was population highest? What have the costs been? How did they get here?

    4. The Problem Barnacles cause small, rare crabs in Europe. America crabs are abundant, large crabs.

    5. Adaptations of Green Crab Feeding habits Tolerance of different environments Ability to occupy several coasts: South Africa, Australia, Japan, and both coasts of North America Easy to adapt

    6. Feeding Activities Impact on the population of dogwhelks, mussels, and cockles. Preys on quahogs along coast of North America. Significant reduction of native clams and shore crab.

    8. Controlling The Green Crab Scientist Grosholz and Rivera are trying to catch all green crab in Bodega Bay Harbor. The crabs are being caught and fewer are here now. We are controlling them by keeping them from entering in the first place. In some places Crabs are being reduced by adding more restrictions on imports from out of state.

    9. Comparing crabs

    10. Transportation of the Green Crab Green Crabs are sometimes brought on purpose. Some are brought by planes or boats. Some are from ballast water. Some are from packing materials. Scientists think they came from the east coast of North America to Bodega Bay but they don’t know how.

    11. Bodega Bay Crabs

    13. Conclusions: European Green Crab It is a problem here because barnacles keep crab in control in Europe. It is killing off a lot of native species that we need. The Green Crabs highest population in Bodega Bay, was 1996 It has effected several crab industries such as the soft clam, shore crab, and even had an impact on the Dungeness Crab. The Green Crab came mostly from ballast water, packing material, and sometimes even airplanes.

    14. Future Clean boat before trips Don’t bring shells back from the beach Keep watch for any green crab eggs not pick up any crabs Do beach clean ups Write to the government about the problem
