2. Biographical Information: Born August 2, 1924 in Harlem, NY and died on December 1 1987, St. Paul-de-Vence, France of stomach cancer.
The 1st of 9 children of Berdis (Jones) a clergyman and David (step-father) a factory worker.
Relationship with his stepfather was tense and combative; he opposed Baldwin's friends who were not African American and urged the young man to reject the secular world His writing started as a way to escape his stern stepfather.
He graduated from high school in 1942 and moved to New Jersey to begin working as a railroad hand.
1960's he became politically active in support of civil rights.
Wrote novels, poetry, essays and a screenplay in the later years of his life.
