  2. Introduction • Gica Incubator is an initiator for development and supporting small businesses in Ohrid region. It’s founded by “Gica” DOO – Ohrid and “Agency for Promotion of Entrepreneurship of Macedonia (APERM)”. It has excellent business premises with 3000 m2 (before long 4000 m2) including 20 business premises with Workshops, Offices, Toilets, Fine illumination and ventilation, Telephone lines and Internet connections. It has Conference Room for the clients with presentation equipment, asphalted side roads and parking lots, 24 hours security, maintained gardens and parks and highest hygienic and environmental standards. • Once placed in the industrial zone, the company, nowadays, due to the grown of the town, is located in the central region of Ohrid • The incubator is excellent instrument for direction of entrepreneurial spirit, inventiveness and modest investments in the creation of self owned successful business and new employments • Business incubator communicates with other Business Start-up Centers and incubators in Macedonia and with representatives of international community, however it’s not include in regional networking to date First Southeast European Business Centre and Incubator Conference 20/21 October 2006 Tuzla

General info on Gica Business Incubator – Ohrid, Macedonia Facts and figures • The incubator is run by incubator manager & project manager with strong support from the staff at main Company GICA DOO • The incubator provides following services: superb business premises at affordable fees; conference room; services at privileged prices, import and export documents; training programs, loans for the incubators members, cooperation with the founder including engaging the members in execution of works for the founder and finding them new business partners • The annual budget for 2005 was 53640 EUR • The GICA business incubator is established in 2001 in Ohrid • Our Incubator is example for efficiently used funds to Start-up new small and medium businesses (28 companies in 5 years), creation of the new vacancies (more than 220 employees) and revitalisation of the ruined business capacities First Southeast European Business Centre and Incubator Conference 20/21 October 2006 Tuzla

Economic environment of the centre / incubator • The following branches of business and industry are supported by the Incubator: companies for design and production of furniture, cardboard boxes and plastic containers, irony objects, woodworking, shoes, aluminous doors and windows, textile and electronic, as well as civic associations of the organic food producers; • The supported business are located within the incubator and have local, national and, several companies, international outreach (working for Italian, German and Greek market) • The supported business have 2-20 employees First Southeast European Business Centre and Incubator Conference 20/21 October 2006 Tuzla

Lessons learned Top 5 achievements • Successful pilot project in order to direct the entrepreneurial spirit, inventiveness and modest investments in the creation of self owned successful business and new employments. The special emphasis is given to support women-entrepreneurs, members of minorities in Macedonia and people with special needs. • Cooperation between foreign investor (World Bank) and private business (Gica DOO Ohrid) via “Agency for Promotion of Entrepreneurship of Macedonia (APERM) • Promotion of successful Business Incubator Concept in the country • Inspiration for private investors to duplicate incubator concept into the creation of other private-owned Business Incubators • Efficiently used funds to create, develop and support small businesses First Southeast European Business Centre and Incubator Conference 20/21 October 2006 Tuzla

Lessons learned Top 5 (past or future) challenges • Struggle to encourage state agency (Agency for Promotion of Entrepreneurship) and foreign investor (World Bank) to support private company (Gica DOO Ohrid) in the establishment and development of the first Business Incubator in Ohrid region through trust building process • Troubles in the promotion of Business Incubator Concept in the region as new concept for development and supporting of small businesses and possibility for creation of new vacancies • Reaching the balance between ‘old’ incubators members which are providers of secure income for the incubator and new one which are users of the loans and credits – need to extend the incubator phase for the members • Need of external support via grants and credit lines in order to materialize visions for further development of the Business Incubator in order to increase the general technological level of the incubator with introduction of the companies dealing with modern technology and information sciences and expansion of the incubator capacities • Need of external support in the development of all of the incubator services completely First Southeast European Business Centre and Incubator Conference 20/21 October 2006 Tuzla

Regional cooperation • Our proposals for regional cooperation of a SEE Business Start-up / incubators are: • Creation of the Regional Network with Internet portal in order to exchange expertise and experience between network members and possibilities for further development of incubator concept • This network should provide and promote detailed information for its members (Incubators and Start-up centers), including the information for the companies-clients of the incubators in order to foster and facilitate collaboration and business deals between companies from the different countries in the region • Regarding our GICA Business Incubator we need support to materialize our ambitions to expand into Regional center for development of SM companies for Macedonia, Albania and Kosovo with conference centre (with presentation and translation equipment) and intellectual incubator - training centre for entrepreneurs and creator of the effective link between education and business First Southeast European Business Centre and Incubator Conference 20/21 October 2006 Tuzla
