Gorman Metropolitan State University of Denver 1 OBESITY AMONG AFRICAN-AMERICANS 2 Obesity Among African-Americans Obesity is a major problem in America. As time goes by, obesity continues to grow. Americans exercise less and eat more. Seventy-three percent of adults are obese and 43% of children are obese (Gaines, 2010). Being overweight can lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, arthritis, and some cancers. Of all races, African-Americans have the highest obesity rates in the United States, especially African-American women and children. Unfortunately, $190 billion is spent every year on obesity-related health issues (Maximizing the Impact, 2014).
