What is a Spinal Cord Injury? Spinal cord injury (SCI) is the result of a traumatic injury that bruises, partially tears, or completely tears the spinal cord. Compression of the spine or neck can be a potential cause of SCI.
What is a Cervical Spinal Cord Injury? Your neck comprises seven vertebrae, C1 to C7. These vertebrae form the cervical spine. An injury to the cervical spine is the most severe form of SCI. It impacts the cervical nerves and can result in partial or complete loss of sensory function, and other associated symptoms. The cervical spine is the closest to the brain. Injury to this portion of the spinal cord can even be fatal.
What happens after an SCI? An SCI is a devastating and debilitating injury. It can cause extensive, and sometimes irreversible damage. The two medical terms used to describe an SCI patient’s condition are: Quadriplegia/Tetraplegia: Loss of movement and feeling in arms, legs trunk, pelvic organs. Paraplegia: Loss of function and feeling from the waist-down (trunk, legs, and pelvic organs)
Symptoms of a Cervical SCI Injury affecting C1 to C4 nerves can have the following symptoms: • Quadriplegia • Breathing difficulties • Loss of bladder and/or bowel control • Loss or impairment of speech • Inability to perform daily activities without assistance Patients with this type of injury may need a motorised wheelchair.
Injury affecting C5 nerve can have the following symptoms: • Quadriplegia or paraplegia • Limited movement in arms and elbows • Breathing difficulties • Loss of bladder and/or bowel control • Loss or impairment of speech • Inability to perform daily activities without assistance Patients with this type of injury may need a motorised wheelchair.
Injury affecting C6 nerve can have the following symptoms: • Quadriplegia (with paralysis of the hands) • Breathing difficulties • Loss of bladder and/or bowel control • Loss or impairment of speech • Can move in and out of bed/wheelchair with a little support A patient with an injury to the C6 may be able to drive an adapted car!
Injury affecting C7 nerve can have the following symptoms: • Paraplegia • Loss of bladder and/or bowel control • Can perform simple everyday tasks; may require assistance for complex activities • Can move arms and shoulders • Can extend fingers and elbows to an extent A patient with an injury to the C7 may be able to drive an adapted car!
