Background In 1927 Hilda Leyel founded the Society of Herbalists, which would later become The Herb Society, with the aim of supporting the practice of herbal medicine in Britain. In the same year she opened the first Culpeper shop in Baker Street, London, selling herbal medicines, food and cosmetics. In 1931 she edited and published Maude Grieve’s famous ‘The Modern Herbal’.
