  3. TYPE 1 – PARENTING Help all families establish home environments to support children as students.

  4. Type I - Parenting • Academic Intervention: Provides professional development to site coordinators about communicating with families • Bridges: Partners with Howard Community College to provide opportunities for adult learning • BSAP: Facilitate neighborhood meetings to help parents understand school culture and policies • Family & Community Outreach: Acquaints parents with goals of program through personal communication and via an interactive web page.

Type I - Parenting Hispanic Achievement: School based liaisons and Parent Academy equip parents with parenting skills MESA: Acquaints parents with goals of program through personal communication and via an interactive web page International Student & Family Services: Seminars deliver strategies with an emphasis placed on parenting Title I: Provides professional development about family involvement for Title I schools

  6. TYPE 2 – COMMUNICATING Design effective forms of school-to-home and home-to-school communications about school programs and children's progress.

Type 2 - Communicating • Academic Intervention: Provides parents with reports on progress through Summer Programs • Bridges: Newsletters highlighting student achievement and upcoming events • BSAP: School-based staff provide a variety of methods for parent communication • Family & Community Outreach: Parent engagement for SAT Prep classes

  8. Type 2 - Communicating Hispanic Achievement: Assists schools in communicating with parents in a linguistic and culturally effective manner. MESA: Maintains an interactive web page that informs students and parents with regards to MESA activities International Student & Family Services: Interpreting and Translation Services for P/T conferences and other communication needs. Title I: Plans and facilitates math, reading, and MSA Family Nights

  10. TYPE 3 - VOLUNTEERING Recruit and organize parent help and support.

Type 3 - Volunteering • Bridges: Parent and student field trips as incentives for student attendance or community service. • BSAP: Ongoing volunteer opportunities are available throughout the year • Family & Community Outreach: Summer school administrators secure community volunteers for student mock interviews • Hispanic Achievement: Extends personal invitations to parents to volunteer, offering different options that meet their availability.

  12. Type 3 - Volunteering MESA: Involves parents to serve as volunteers to assist teachers in helping students accomplish technical goals International Student & Family Services: Facilitate events that promote parent volunteerism

  13. TYPE 4 - LEARNING AT HOME Provide information and ideas to families about how to help students at home with homework and other curriculum-related activities, decisions, and planning.

Type 4 – Learning at Home Academic Intervention: Summer Programs provide ideas for home-based summer learning through weekly newsletters Bridges: During “Family Show Off Nights”, staff model learning activities to do at home with students in between demonstrations. BSAP: Family participation in helping students set academic goals and review report cards Family & Community Outreach: Elementary Reading teachers demonstrated reading techniques to children while parents observed

  15. Type 4 – Learning at Home • Hispanic Achievement: Increases participation in what schools are already doing. Also, offers some workshops in Spanish and the Parent Academy • MESA: Encourages parental involvement by providing web based programs whereby students and parents may jointly participate • International Student & Family Services: Liaisons convey messages from teachers, counselors, and administrators about student’s academic concerns and school policies. • Title I: Provide parents with math and reading programs and other resources

  17. TYPE 5 - DECISION MAKING Include parents in school decisions, developing parent leaders and representatives.

  18. Type 5 – Decision Making and Advocacy • Academic Intervention: Solicit parent feedback on Summer Programs, including areas in need of improvement • Bridges: Parent advisory boards that help with program activity planning, reviewing data and increasing community partnerships and parent involvement • BSAP: Collaborate with local organizations to provide leadership training for parents • Family & Community Outreach: Collaborate with counselors to provide parent training on effective advocacy

  19. Type 5 – Decision Making and Advocacy Hispanic Achievement: Talent spotting, extending personal invitations, and connecting with other parents. MESA: Activities provide choices for parents and students to seek appropriate STEM field courses of study International Student & Family Services: Prepares parents for all levels of leadership in parent organizations, advisory councils, and committees. Title I: Parents provide input on schools’ Family Involvement Plans and Compacts

  20. TYPE 6 COLLABORATING WITH COMMUNTY Identify and integrate resources and services from the community to strengthen school programs, family practices, and student learning and development.

Type 6 – Collaborating with the Community Academic Intervention: Summer Program staff are encouraged to engage community business partners in celebrating student success Bridges: Sponsored Health Resource Fair for parents and students in collaboration with local health and safety organizations BSAP: Provide extended day, week, and year learning opportunities that increase student achievement and cultural awareness Family & Community Outreach: Partnered with community churches and Secondary curricular offices to present HSA information to community

Type 6 – Collaborating with the Community • Hispanic Achievement: Networking with other organizations that can serve the Hispanic community. • MESA: Prepares students for STEM field careers by collaborating with colleges, private industry, and government agencies • International Student & Family Services: Collaborates with community organizations to help immigrant families in the transition process • Title I: Works with community members and governmental stakeholders to increase resources available to families
