John Steinbeck studied hard at Stanford University • never graduated. • Later tried to become a free-lance writer in New York, but finally gave up. • He wrotehisfirstnovel, Cup of Gold, in 1929. • Histhreefirstnovelswereunsuccesful. • The firstpopularbookwas Tortilla Flat, written in 1935. • Also a moviewas made in 1942.
