  2. 500 B.C. • Ancient Greeks, Persians, Chinese, and Indians found natural gas in the ground. • The Chinese used hollow bamboo shoots to transport natural gas. • These people found out that natural gas ignites when struck by lightning. • They also found out that natural gas can be burned under pans full of saltwater to make sea salt, since you are left with salt when salt water evaporates.

  3. 1626 A.D. • Naturally occuring gas is found in the US by John Clayton in a large reserve.

  4. 1816 A.D. • Natural gas is 1stused to power a street lamp in Maryland. The lamp had to be lowered at sunrise and raised at sunset.

  5. 1821 A.D. • The United States’ first successful gas well was dug by William Hart.

  6. 1885 A.D. • Robert bunsen invents bunsen burner which combines natural gas and air at the correct pressure to make a safe flame used for cooking and heating.

  7. 1947 A.D. • Gas field wastes 300 million cu. Ft of natural gas per day since oil drillers could not detect the natural gas.

  8. Present • Many new uses have been found for natural gas including the use of it to power cars.
