  5. Urban Problems • Tenement conditions were extremely harsh • Lack of sanitation and disease • Fires and crimes become a big problem • Hiring of full time firefighters and police • Reading City Fire

  6. Settlement Houses • In addition to benevolent societies, settlement houses also opened • Neighborhood centers in poor areas that were staffed by professionals and volunteers that provided education, recreation, etc. • Jane Addams – Founder of the Hull House

  7. Society and Culture • Worlds Fairs and Amusement Parks • The Rise of Sports • The growth of Publishing • American Literature • American Painters • A New Art Form
