In this unit, you’re going to read two articles that compare and contrast between life in the country and that of the city. Let’s learn the key vocabulary for Reading One, first. Open page 21. What is the unit about?

READING ONE The Farming Life for Me Reading One is a letter to the editor of a magazine for young people. The writer, Zachary Blaine, is a teenage boy who lives on a farm. He explains why he thinks it’s better to grow up on a farm than to grow up in the city.
READING FOR MAIN IDEAS Page: 24 1- Main Idea • (c) Zachary explains why he thinks it’s great to grow up on a farm instead of in the city. 2- Zachary gives four main reasons to support his idea. Label them1-4 as they appear in the reading (1-d) Farm children are too busy doing farm work to get into trouble. (2-a) Farm children understand at an early age more about life and death than city kids. (3-f) Farm children understand more about nature than city kids. (4-g) Farm children have a greater sense of responsibility than city kids.

READING TWO:Leaving the Farm p.25 • A hundred years ago, most farmers in the United States were small farmers. • Now, large farming companies do more and more of the farming. Many small farmers can’t compete. They sell their farms and move their families to the city. • Read this article about a farm family in North Dakota who recently moved to the city.
Now answer the following questions. p.26 1.Why does Mr. Halley drive back to his old farm once a week? Ans. He drives back to the farm to keep his connection to the land. 2.Are the Halleys happy they decided to sell the farm? Explain Ans. Yes, they are happy. The children love living in the city. Mr. Halley seems to miss the farm, but he is happy about his new job and increased income
