  2. Who were Lewis & Clark and Sacagawea? Why are they important to US history? What are they famous for? SS1H1 The student will read about and describe the life of historical figures in American history.

  3. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson asked Meriwether Lewis to go on a journey,a long trip.He asked Lewis to explore the land west of the Mississippi River to find a way to reach the Pacific Ocean. Jefferson also wanted to know about the plants, animals, and American Indians in the West.

  4. Lewis had been an army officer. Clark studied map-making. Lewis asked William Clark, a friend from the army, to help him lead the trip. The two men started to plan their journey. Lewis and Clark called their trip the Voyage (a trip) of Discovery. There were no roads or maps for them to follow. They knew they would discover places people had not known about before and hoped to make friends with the American Indians.

  5. France Louisiana Purchase Let’s see what you remember: The United States bought land from _____________ in 1803. The land was called the ___________ ____________. Lewis and Clark traveled through this land on their journey, or a _______ _____. long trip

  6. Getting Ready A tolerant person has respect for others and their ideas. The team spent more than 6 months getting ready for the trip. The men made lists of things they thought they would need. Clark’s dog, Seaman, came along on the trip. He was a good swimmer. Lewis and Clark chose 40 men to come with them. Lewis and Clark were tolerant, so they included people of many backgrounds in their group.

  7. When you go on a trip what kinds of things do you pack? What kinds of things do you think Lewis & Clark and their team packed?

  8. Here’s what Lewis and Clark packed for their Voyage of Discovery: They listed food, clothing, medicine, and tools. The men also packed things to trade with American Indians such as mirrors, beads, blankets, and coins.

  9. Heading West On May 14, 1804, the team was ready. The men set off in a keelboat and 2 smaller boats. A keelboat is a large, flat-bottomed boat for traveling on a river. The Voyage of Discovery had begun!

  10. That summer, they traveled up the Missouri River. Lewis, Clark and others on the trip kept journals. Clark drew pictures of animals and plants in his journal. He made maps for every part of the trip. By October 1804, the team reached some Mandan and Hidatsa (heh DAHT sa) Indian villages. Lewis and Clark decided to spend the winter near them. They built a strong and sturdy fort, called Fort Mandan. People can still visit Fort Mandan today.

  11. Sacagawea A Shoshone Indian woman, Sacagawea, lived near Fort Mandan. She knew the lands the team would travel and spoke American Indian languages. Lewis and Clark asked her to join the voyage and she did. When spring came, the group started to travel again. When Sacagawea saw landmarks such as rivers and mountains, she knew where she was. She kept the team going the right way. A landmark is a feature such as a tree or building that tells people where they are.

  12. Lewis and Clark saw huge herds of buffalo. They also saw beautiful lakes and forests. One day, Sacagawea’s boat flipped over. She jumped in the water and saved many important papers and supplies. She was calm and showed great courage. Courage means being brave. Courage is taking risks to do something important. What are some other ways Sacagawea showed courage? How did Lewis & Clark show courage?

  13. When the team got to the Rocky Mountains, they met some Shoshone Indians whom Sacagawea knew. The Shoshone gave Lewis & Clark horses to carry the team across the Rock Mountains. Sacagawea helped Lewis & Clark and the rest of the group find food. With her help they reached their goal. They reached the Pacific Ocean in November 1805.

  14. Heroes Return! Lewis & Clark returned home in 1806. They were heroes. Lewis & Clark told other people about the land in western North America. Soon, families from the U.S. made new homes along the route Lewis & Clark explored. A route is the path taken to get from one place to another.

  15. We Honor heroes Today, we remember the courage of Lewis, Clark, and Sacagawea. Sacagawea’s picture is on one-dollar coins. In 2004, the U.S. made nickels that show scenes of Lewis & Clark’s travels.

  16. with Sacagawea Making a connection

  17. Lewis & Clark built their own boats. For some parts of their trip they walked. Sometimes they rode horses. They used different types of transportation, or ways of getting places, for different kinds of land and water. In what ways do people travel across the U.S. today?

  18. To send letters, Lewis & Clark gave them to traders and others they met on their journey. These people gave the letters to others until they reached a post office. President Jefferson waited months for news from Lewis & Clark. How do you hear about news today?

  19. Understanding Character Traits Tolerance is respecting people of many backgrounds. Lewis and Clark valued the skills and knowledge of all the people on the Voyage of Discovery. Courage is taking risks to do something important. Lewis, Clark, and Sacagawea faces many dangers on their journey.

  20. What are some ways you show tolerance and courage?
