Background- What is a Hack-A-Thon? What is a Hack-A-Thon How a Hack-A-Thon works • Started in Silicon Valley ~1999 to foster growth in the software development community • Brings together computer / software programmers from all different industries to work on projects center around specific themes • Goal is to develop creative solutions to improve existing products and create new products • Much of the Twitter & Facebook functionality is due to Hack-A-Thon type of events • 24-48 hour event • Different groups present what problems they are trying to solve, and the rest of the developers choose what they want to work on • Small groups form together to develop a specific product(s) and or solutions over a short period • Culminates in a ceremony at the end of the event to report out what was created
