  2. Types of Stages • There are 3 types of stages: • Proscenium • Thrust • Arena

  3. Proscenium Stage • A performance space in which the audience views the action as if through a picture frame. • Some Examples of Proscenium Stages: • Providence High School Auditorium • Halton Theater • Ford’s Theater

  4. Arena Stage • A performance space in which the audience sits all around the stage; sometimes called in-the-round. • Some examples of arena stages: • Plays • Circuses • Wrestling events

  5. Thrust Stage • Combination of proscenium and arena stages, with the audience sitting on two or three sides of the acting area. • Some Examples of Thrust Stages: • Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre • Fashion Runways • Concerts

  7. Informative Design To be informative, a production design must communicate the time and place of the play.

  8. Expressive Design The Design should be expressive of the Mood and Spirit of the play.

  9. Mood vs. Spirit Mood Spirit Refer to the production concept- the way in which the production design team decides that the play is going to be presented. • Usually refers to the dominant emotional quality of the production.
