The Governor’s Chronicle A Newsletter Offering of the Chapter, Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution September 2014 Edition www.thomasnelsonjr.org Minutes of Our Last Meeting June 7th, 2014 Our Next Meeting Sept 9th, 2014, Social 6:30pm – Cash Bar Meeting starts at 7pm. Angelo's Steak and Pancake House located at 755 J. Clyde Morris Blvd. Newport News, VA 23601 Professor of History, Christopher Newport University, spoke on “War & Marriage: Lucy and Henry Knox and the Campaign of 1776.” He explained how the Revolution affected families and every aspect of their lives changed. Henry Knox was born in 170. At 16 years he had a job in a bookstore and in 1771, at age 21, he had his own bookstore. His wife Lucy was born in 1756 and they married June 1774. During the Revolution Henry was in the Lexington Militia. The British were forced to evacuate Lexington in 1776. The Knox’s were separated and 40 letters were sent between them. They remained separated permanently. Jack Lee, Williamsburg Chapter Secretary, gave announcements. Closing remarks were given by President Ken Wood. SAR Recessional was led by Secretary Mason Ware. Chaplain Gary Hodges gave the benediction. Minutes submitted by Mason Ware. The Joint chapter Meeting was called to order by President Ken Wood at 12:00 noon. The invocation was given by Chaplain Gary Hodges. The Pledge of Allegiance by Treasurer Rick Elofson and the SAR Pledge by Jack Lee, Williamsburg Chapter Secretary. Members and their guests were welcomed and members were asked to announce their patriot ancestors. Announcements by President Ken Wood included JROTC Awards, Bingo Night at the Hampton VA, USO volunteers at Patrick Henry Airport, the Presidential Initiative Streamer with three Stars, May 13th-joint grave marking at Ware Church, June 14th-Flag Day, July 18-24-Annual Congress, Greenville, SC, semi-annual BOM meeting at Lunch Bell and October 19, 2014-Yorktown Day. VA Hospital, Hampton, Building 148 October 7th, 2014, 7:00pm *Still Need Help* Meet at the Domiciliary at 6:30pm to set up for the games and refreshments. Bingo starts at 7:00pm and plays for one hour or until our money ($50) is gone, whichever comes first. We clean up and leave by 8:15pm. To do a respectable job takes a minimum crew of four, but the more volunteers, the higher our Stark score. If you can arrive earlier and/or stay later to visit with the long-term patients in Bldg. 146, that’s even better! Vacant Committees need your help. Interested in Pitching In? 3. The Governor’s Chronicle Thomas Nelson, Jr. Chapter, SAR Clifford T. Bowen, Chief of Police of the Poquoson Police Department and Captain, Percy Ward have nominated: Officer  Adam R. Stephens for the Sons of the American Revolution Law Enforcement Award President Ken Wood attended and presented the chapter wreath at a joint  VASSAR/DAR/1812 Society Monument Dedication ceremony on Saturday June14th in the historic Dumfries Cemetery. On the monument are inscribed the names of eleven Revolutionary War patriots and nine War of 1812 Veterans. This event was one of VASSAR President Bill Broadus' presidential initiatives for 2014. (Below) President Wood attended and presented the chapter wreath at the Commemoration of the 233rd  Anniversary of the Battle of Green Springs on July 7th in Williamsburg. During the battle six Virginia and twenty two Pennsylvania American patriots gave their lives for freedom. Also attending were members of the Williamsburg Chapter and VASSAR 2nd Vice President, Ed Truslow. September 2014 Edition Page Three

The Governor’s Chronicle Thomas Nelson, Jr. Chapter, SAR President Ken Wood presented Dr. Phillip Hamilton a Certificate of Appreciation for his program on "War and Marriage: Lucy and Henry Knox and the Campaign of 1776" during the joint meeting on the 7th of June. President Ken Wood with members of the Williamsburg Chapter attending a ceremony on the 26th of June celebrating the 233rd Anniversary of the Engagement at Spencer's Ordinary. The ceremony was held at freedom Park in James City County. More about our Guest Speaker: James A. Cameron, Jr. Executive Producer, Author- Historian-Actor "John Rollison 1723-1780 Free Man of Color in York County" James A. Cameron, Jr. attended Queens College in New York. He studied in his late teens and early twenties with the Everyman theater ensemble. This was the same ensemble, that by the City of New York, Commission for the Arts, brought Street Theater to Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. These productions are still performed annually at Lincoln Center. The company engaged drama consultants such as Geraldine Fitzgerald, Academy Award winner, Louis Gossett, Jr. and Academy Award winning director Eli Kazan. Mr. Cameron has over twelve years of on-air radio broadcasting experience. He worked in stations in New York, Philadelphia, Maryland, Virginia and Georgia. He has worked for The Colonial Williamsburg Corporation as a storyteller and farm interpreter for the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation. June 2014 Edition Page Four

The La Fayette is in the background. The La Fayette, a stealth frigate of the French Navy, made a stop at Yorktown on Monday morning,  June 2, 2014. The purpose was to honor the French sailors and soldiers and their American allies that participated in the siege of Yorktown in 1781.Captain Serge Bordarier, escorted by 30 French sailors, came ashore and laid a wreath at the Monument to Victory and Alliance. The La Fayette, anchored in the York River below the Monument to Victory and Alliance then fired a 21 gun salute in honor of George Washington  and the Marquis de Lafayette.Members of the Thomas Nelson, Jr. Chapter,  Williamsburg  Chapter and VASSAR Officers  attended  the ceremony.
