Social Media in Sandy • Pretty moderate user of social media • Currently use Facebook • Looking to start Twitter account soon • How we began • Started Facebook “test” page in January of 2010. • Had 76 fans after first day of fan page being created • Swelled to over 1,000 fans within two weeks.
How has social media changed business practices? • New policy • Decentralized policy on who can update the Facebook site • Centralized policy on how many Facebook pages are associated with the City • Policy governing what will be posted • Time Commitment • Additional item to update and monitor • New method for public notices • City Facebook page has had almost 37,000 views since its inception
New opportunities with social media • Public Forum Announcements • Using social media as method for public announcements (Budget Committee) • Recruitments • Method for encouraging local talent • Emergency Updates • Wind Storm 2011
Issues with social media • Keeping current on updates without inundating “fans” with information • Time commitments from staff to monitor and update all social media outlets • Adhering to state statutes regarding records retention • Dept. of Administrative Services has great guidelines on this website: http://oregon.gov/DAS/EISPD/EGOV/BOARD/social_networking_guide/index.shtml
Issues with social media • Control over public comments • Sandy’s experience with allowing comments • Relevancy • How long will some of the current social media outlets be popular or relevant
Suggestions for social media use Determine who will update and monitor the outlets that you use Develop policy for use How many social media outlets will you use? Make sure you are ready to go live with your social media site.
