Defining Podcast • The term “podcast” is a blend of words “iPod” and “broadcast”. • A podcast is a series of digital-media files which are distributed over the internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and computers. (wikipedia - podcasting)

(wikipedia - podcasting) New uploaded media files will be automatically downloaded to listener’s computer by iPodcatchers once they subscribe the podcast. Defining podcast • A podcast consists of many media files and a RSS feed xml text file. • Media files are automatically downloaded to subscriber’s computer with podcatcher software like iTunes. • Listeners transfer downloaded media files to their iPod, mp3 player to listen on the go.
Types of podcast • Audio only podcast • Audio only, plays on any mp3 player. • mp3 files + a RSS xml file • e.g. fondren library: http://library.rice.edu/services/podcasts • ESL: http://www.eslpod.com/website/ • Enhanced podcast • Audio + images, like a slide show, plays on computer and later version of iPods. • m4a files + a RSS xml file • e.g. Naked Scientist Podcast http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/ • Video podcast • Audio + video, plays on computer and iPod with video • m4v or mp4 files + a RSS xml file • e.g. Real Nebraska. http://admissions.unl.edu/real_nebraska/ • Combined podcast (media files are mix of mp3 and m4v/mp4 files) • Rice IT http://itpodcasts.rice.edu/
Podcasting in Education • Podcasting lectures – “coursecasting”. Podcast Consumer What you need: • Computer with internetconnection • iPodcatcher like iTunes, juice • Optional - Media player if you want to listen on the go.
Finding and subscribing to podcasts • Find podcasts • iTunes store->podcasts • Other podcast directories such as podcastpickle.com, podomatic.com • Subscribe to podcasts • Click on the “subscribe” link on the page • Or if you know the url of the podcast feed xml file, go to iTunes->Advanced->Subscribe to Podcast, paste the feed url into the popup window.

Podcast Producer – prepare media files • audio mp3 files • Audacity – freeware that does sound recording and editing • LAME mp3 encoder – freeware that enables Audacity to export mp3 files • video m4v/mp4 files • Final Cut Pro or iMovie for video editing
