  2. What is Podcasting? Podcasting is the means to communicate information through an audio file. Audio files that are of interest to you automatically downloaded to your computer and synced to your MP3 player. • Broadcast + iPod = Podcast • Note: Any MP3 player can be used to listen to a podcast

  4. Where did it begin 2001 2003 2004 2005 2010 From innovation to confirmation podcasting has transitioned through many stages of the Innovation-Decision process.

  5. Timeline 2001 Adam Curry, Tristan Louis and Dave Winer collaborated in using RSS technology and their media content to provide the first, Albeit, prototype podcasts.

  6. Timeline 2003 • Stephen Downes used RSS to demonstrate audio file aggregation and syndication in his Ed Radio application • Christopher Lydon, an NPR radio talk show host, started linking MP3 files of his interviews to his Berkman weblog

  7. Timeline 2004 • Christopher Lydon’s use of RSS and MP3 files motivated Adam Curry to develop an iPodder script. • The iPodder script evolved into the iPodder software which was the first aggregator for downloading media files. • Articles on podcasts became available online

  8. Timeline 2005 • Podcasting exploded with more than 2 million hits generated for a “podcasting” Google search. • Reported origination of podcasts from the US, Canada, Sweden, and Australia. • Apple Computers, Inc. integrated podcasts in its iTunes software

  9. Timeline 2010 • Sites that list podcast feeds became a vital resource in finding the kind of content that would interest different individuals. • podcasters.org • podcast.net • ipodder.org

Basic Research • Podcasting was developed in 2004 by former MTV video jockey Adam Curry and software developer Dave Winer. • The innovation of Podcasting was not invented to address a particular problem. • It was more so an invention that Adam Curry need is the means to communicate information through an audio file.

  13. Development • Evolved into the iPodder software which was the first aggregator for downloading media files. iPodder script enabled him to automatically download Internet radio broadcasts to his iPod. Several developers improved upon his idea, and podcasting was officially born.

  15. How to Create a Podcast • Download Audacity software to the computer • Connect Microphone to computer • Click the record button on the software • Begin talking • Click on the stop button when done • Materials Needed: • Computer • Microphone • Software • Topic of interest

  16. Commercialization • Majority of podcasters are amateurs that provide a range of topics that anyone can listen to. • Anyone can create a podcast • Due to the ease of creating a podcast many individuals who have begun following existing podcast becomes podcasters themselves.

  17. Commercialization • Podcasters and Podcasts are free from government regulation. They don't need to buy a license to broadcast their programming, as radio stations do, and they don't need to conform to the Federal Communication Commission's (FCC) broadcast decency regulations

  18. Searching for Podcast • Individuals can locate podcasts on interested topics by using sites that list podcast as well as iTunes.

Re-Invention • Podcasting may not be adopted by all members of society but this innovation will continue to evolve. • Vodcasting which is a video podcast is it its knowledge and maybe even its persuasion stage for majority of society. • There are of course change agents who have adopted the innovation and are using communication changes to commercialize the technology
